Former U.S. President Donald Trump is facing backlash from some members of the Catholic community after posting an AI-generated image that shows him dressed as the Pope. The image appeared on official White House social media accounts shortly after the passing of Pope Francis on April 21st.
In the image, Trump is shown wearing a white cassock and a pointed bishop's hat, known as a mitre, along with a large cross around his neck. He is seen holding up one finger with a serious expression on his face.
The timing of the post drew strong criticism, especially since the Catholic Church is in a period of mourning and preparing to choose the next Pope. The New York State Catholic Conference responded sharply on social media, saying:
"There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President. We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us."
Trump had joked to reporters earlier in the week, saying: "I’d like to be Pope."
Some political figures also condemned the post. Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called it offensive, saying:
"This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions, and shows that the leader of the right-wing world enjoys clowning around."
Despite the backlash, the White House defended Trump’s intentions. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump traveled to Italy to attend Pope Francis’s funeral and pay his respects. She added that Trump has consistently supported Catholics and religious freedom.
The Vatican has not officially commented on the post, with spokesman Matteo Bruni declining to answer questions during a press briefing on Saturday. The Church is now focused on the upcoming conclave to select a new Pope.
